ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the context of this study, including the internationalization of higher education, the construction of world-class universities in China, academic mobility and returnee faculty, as well as China’s talent policies that have created incentives for academic returnees. This chapter also introduces the significance of the book and outlines its structure, which includes chapters that explore different aspects of the academic career development of the unique and understudied group of faculty, namely, returnee faculty in the Chinese research university context.
