ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of overseas experience on job mobility for faculty in Chinese research universities. Using data from a national survey, we focus on three types of job mobility: occupational, institutional, and intersectoral. Our analysis indicates that returnee faculty are less likely to change job roles within their current institution, but there is no significant difference between returnee and domestic faculty regarding institutional and intersectoral mobility. Furthermore, our findings also highlight the negative effects of overseas experience on job mobility, particularly for male returnee faculty members and those working in the eastern region of the country, indicating that these individuals are less likely to be mobile.
