ABSTRACT

The world changes constantly. As such, what succeeded in prior generations may not prove fruitful in present times. Nevertheless, the processes underlying adaptation remain the same. In this chapter, the author explains why he believes Psychoadaptation is more important now than at any prior time in recent history. With the proliferation of social media, nothing we do is anonymous. Therefore, one must learn how to adapt to these new contexts without risking one’s reputation, and to transcend contexts that endanger one’s emotional well-being. Not all adaptations are beneficial, however, as people weaponize benevolent aims to enrich their pockets, or gain likes. This means that a new way is required to conceptualize our relationships online and what the author refers to as internet consciousness.
