ABSTRACT

The questionnaire survey was repeated on the study group approximately fifteen months after the baseline survey. This chapter concentrates on the findings of the baseline survey, before any of the study group were exposed to the alcohol education package being evaluated. Ninety-six per cent of all 12to 13-year-olds in the baseline survey reported having tasted an alcoholic drink. Thirty-four per cent claimed that they had never smoked tobacco and 6 per cent reported that they currently smoke cigarettes. Sleeping tablets/tranquillisers were clearly the most commonly used illicit drugs. Many surveys both in the United Kingdom and in other countries throughout the world have shown large differences between adolescent males and females in their use and misuse of alcohol. There were no significant differences between males and females in the study group in their self-reported attitudes about alcohol.
