ABSTRACT

Fortunately all teachers who had been recommended were willing to take on the role of ‘specialist teacher’ in their region, despite the additional workload that this would entail. In reality, however, it is clearly impossible to rule out completely the individual influence of any one teacher. Pupils’ receptiveness to the alcohol education package will obviously be dependent to some extent on such ‘teacher effect’. Feedback forms were returned by eighteen teachers, covering a wide range of age, academic discipline and experience of teaching. Pupils who participated in the study were also asked to complete a ‘feedback sheet’ at the end of the alcohol education package. The qualitative information from teachers suggests that the program successfully achieved its major objectives of providing teachers with an inexpensive, easy-to-use alcohol education package, demanding little preparation time or in-service training. Problems concerning the quality of the stimulus materials were evident in the comments from participating teachers.
