ABSTRACT

The earlier psychologists naturally gave their whole attention to mental operations that were fully conscious, as it is these of which they are aware ourselves and which, for this reason, are most readily presumed in the behaviour of others. For the purpose of readjustment, it may be advisable at times to change some factor in the environment; but the thing regarded as most essential by psycho-analysts is to give the patient a full understanding of the causes that have produced his morbid state and so to produce in his mind a revaluation of the meaning and emotional tone of the painful complex that has been formed. By auto-suggestion is meant the power, of which psychologists all have more than they realise, to enlist the help of the subconscious mind for any purpose that psychologists desire to follow. Its use has formed a large part of various religious movements.
