ABSTRACT

Arriving on the northern coast of Hispaniola (Haiti), Columbus finds more villages, but the people always ran away, and the huts contained no gold. He sails east as geographic confusion ensues, with his guides insisting that this land is a place called Caritaba, and that Bohio was still farther east. The guides warned Columbus that cannibals lived and roamed freely throughout Caritaba; the explorer did not believe the guides and sails on. The towering mountains and the large bays the fleet encountered convinced Columbus that the land must be a portion of the mainland or a very large island. Good relations between the explorers and the Indios continue with Columbus noting that the natives should be converted to Christianity.
