ABSTRACT

BEFORE we proceed further in our attempt to trace out the development of sacramental ideas, it is fitting that we should pause for a moment to examine the prophetic attitude towards the sacrificial system, a difficult question to which we have already made a passing reference. The close connexion that has always existed between sacrifice and sacrament makes the discussion germane to our main purpose. It will help us also to form a more definite opinion upon that other vexed question: whether the prophets found any essential opposition between such ideas as underlie the terms ‘sacramental ‘and ‘spiritual.’
