ABSTRACT
WHEN Alexander the Great in the middle of the fourth century B.C. conquered the East, the gods of Olympus had no share in his victories. The old Greek religion had already lost its hold over the minds of men, and the conquests of the soldiers only served to open the floodgates through which the religious ideas of the barbarians could pour in upon the vacant soil.
