ABSTRACT

WE have now come to the point where we must try to determine what is our Lord’s own position in the history of sacramentalism. For modern students that raises a difficult question—how difficult can be seen at once if we compare the judgment of Dr. Schweitzer 1 on the one hand that, according to the Fourth Gospel, Jesus came into the world for the express purpose of inaugurating the era of effectual sacraments, with the guarded suggestion of Dr. Glover 2 on the other, that Jesus instituted no sacrament. Between Dr. Glover and the Fourth Gospel as thus interpreted there is as wide a gulf as it is possible to imagine.
