ABSTRACT

THERE seems, then, enough evidence to justify us in believing that original Christianity shared that atmosphere of sacramentalism which pervaded the time and place of its birth. This conclusion is bound to affect our attitude towards the subject of the present chapter. That there was development in the sacramentalism of the Apostolic Church we shall see no reason to doubt; indeed, we hope to show three stages of it as represented in the Acts, in S. Paul, and in the Fourth Gospel. But that there was any violent or revolutionary change we find it difficult to believe.
