ABSTRACT
The name of Gertrude Bell appears in many books, on many subjects; she was a remarkable, gifted and brilliant woman. Her stepmother, Lady Bell, who edited the three published volumes of her letters, described her thus: ‘scholar, poet, historian, archaeologist, art critic, mountaineer, explorer, gardener, naturalist, distinguished servant of the State; all of these and recognised by experts as an expert in them all’.
