ABSTRACT
In this first chapter we consider some of the factors that are likely to be relevant to our theme of political change: the geography of Spain; its population; its recent history; the social structure; the contours of economic development; and rapidly changing mores that are reflected in literature, in the media and, most importantly, in the minds of the Spanish people.
