ABSTRACT

Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the most conflict-affected region globally, with wars largely concentrated in four theatres – the Sahel, the lake Chad Basin, the great lakes region and Eastern Africa – as well as the Central African Republic (CAR) and Mozambique. Most internal conflicts today are fought on multiple levels, including locally and in national capitals through armed politics, and they can involve both international (e.g., third-party states, multilateral stabilisation missions or peacekeeping missions) and transnational actors (e.g., Salafi-jihadist groups). Conflicts can also play out in the cyber domain through disinformation campaigns. Throughout the reporting period, Sub-Saharan Africa’s conflict-affected countries also remained some of the hardest hit by the global economic turmoil resulting from the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
