ABSTRACT

The progress made by India in the 20th century, even during the British rule but particularly after independence, is any critic’s envy. India saw its future in self-reliance in science and technology and modern education and, in the 75 years of independence, the country has risen to be a soft-power and a force to reckon with. Globalization has transformed India’s economy as well as the Indian middle class. At the root of this is the system and the legacy left by the foreign power, its nurturing and augmentation by the visionaries in the areas of technical education, and the fillip to agriculture and the industry and institution-building.
