ABSTRACT
The first Europeans to command any respect in the Indian courts were the Medicine men. They enriched the sciences in various ways, but with time as trading of the East India Company grew, they served as frontmen in facilitating the trading concessions and exemptions from the Mughal Empire that got the English merchant a clear advantage over the European competitors and even Indians. This further enabled the British to defend their interests, with military strength whenever needed.
