ABSTRACT
We discuss how the multifarious interests of the British led to the advent of modern astronomy in India. This was spurred by their need for geographical and navigational aid, timekeeping, knowledge of weather, sea storms and tides but also maturing into the establishment of scientific observatories and cooperations in the scientific observational programmes.
