ABSTRACT

Education in the Presidencies of Bengal, Bombay, Madras, and the North-West developed along different lines. Calcutta was the imperial capital where the government’s investment in education bore fruits. While the Hindu leadership was still in the hands of the landed class, the new self-made middle class rose that knew well that because of science, it could seek and obtain goodwill and support from the government as well as the landed class. The second half of the century saw the emergence of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science as a great inspiration to the Bengal youth, the introduction of science subjects in universities and prominent colleges and science books and journals.
