ABSTRACT

Existing literature around early literacy and picture-book reception – from paratexts, to page turns to reading aloud and parent mediation – tends to focus on pedagogical and educational experiences. This chapter highlights those studies within the trade publishing industry to gauge on the differences between, and comprehension and engagement with, paper and digital texts. The review of literature also foreshadows the influence of digital media not only in reading but as a disruptor to children’s traditional reading due to the emergence of gaming and apps as well as defining digital features as having an entertainment or educational focus.
