ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings from the in-depth interviews, first discussing the methodological framework of the research and the coding process as well as how the collation of the data related to industry practice. This is contextualised via the author’s knowledge of picture-book publishing practice and their knowledge of traditional paper and digital picture-book production. The analysis of the interview transcriptions is interspersed with the coded data and the literature on how children process picture-book texts and formats. The analysis also challenges current perceptions of digital formats and the industry’s response to formats emerged as a result of the pandemic lockdowns. In this section, the distinction between educational and entertainment texts is also investigated with a view to understanding the deeper levels of commitment to traditional formats and the existing tension that picture-book creators feel when balancing their preferences for the traditional paper format with the challenges of accessibility and children’s increased use of digital media.
