ABSTRACT

Porches, verandahs and covered areas are invaluable extensions to most of the buildings considered in this book. Not only do they protect the building but they form that link between outdoors and in which is so much needed in our climate. Too often campers must dash from office to caravan, visitors from Information Centre to car, to avoid a downpour. Even drizzle is to be avoided when the drying of clothes is a problem. Yet it is the essence of a holiday to be able to linger unhurried, chat to acquaintances, or pore over maps or guidebooks. A deep covered porch or verandah can enormously increase the value of a building in terms of quality of use. It must be of generous proportions; perhaps as large again as the room it adjoins. It should be sheltered from the prevailing wind and wherever possible catch some sun. A porch can be particularly useful in winter since the low sun will reach far into it.
