ABSTRACT
The world which emerged from the Second World War was very different from the one that had entered it. In the interwar period the balances of power had been multiple, subtle, and shifting, and this had been apparent quite as much in maritime affairs as in any other. But by the end of 1945, the power potentials of nations having been mobilized and organized as never before, the situation was a great deal starker.
