ABSTRACT

The best way to approach any new subject is to start with topics that interest you already. This advice is based on sound psychological principles: a person whose curiosity is already aroused is likely to be especially receptive to pertinent facts and ideas, and especially appreciative of the contributions that experts have made to the relevant topics. Active reading, stimulated by questions to which the reader wants to know the answers, is more fun than passive assimilation of unwanted information, and what is read with curiosity is normally understood and remembered with clarity. A reader whose appetite has first been whetted in this way will probably develop interests in other branches of the subject and will certainly be better equipped to cope with them.
