ABSTRACT

We have seen anger and its kin in a double role, puzzling to all who are concerned with human welfare. Anger has been an advocate of the right, helping men to strengthen their moral code and their moral institutions. It has also been a chief offender, a destroyer of friendship and family and state, ready to bring to naught the good-will which is ever in sore need of increase. Anger has thus been as a hand in molding religion and morals, helping to give character to the gods and to their relation with one another and with men, active early in all religion and especially at the source of monotheism. Religion and morals have been as embarrassed by its help as by its opposition.
