ABSTRACT
We have seen the distrust felt toward our emotions, and how these misgivings in a measure have been quieted by “finds” in many sciences,—in biology, physiology, and psychology. The emotions and instincts have in consequence come to be regarded as among the central forces of human character. More clearly than ever before, we now know that a man cannot be well of body or of spirit if his emotions be not disposed aright. Religion, whose concern is so clearly with these native energies, must in consequence see her own labor in a new light. A heightened dignity is given to all who bring government to our savage passions.
