ABSTRACT
The benefits of anger will not all have been recounted unless we now look more intently to the individual life. Anger we have seen in the public support of rights, coming also to the support of the great institutions by which rights are given their form and are encouraged. But the moral course’ of this passion takes also a direction less outward, my anger now aimed not to compel my neighbor or my enemy but to compel myself, urging me to fulfill what is another’s due and right. In this we shall see hostility in the unfolding of conscience, without which there is no flowering of the moral life.
