ABSTRACT

How may we access fundamentalists' beliefs and values? We might observe their movement's structure, its exercise of authority, and its worship practices. An important additional form of evidence is its artefacts: those features which serve specific purposes but reveal underlying beliefs. For the Brethren, these include their magazines, obituary notices, testimonies, and the author's father's Bible. Detailed analysis suggests their emphasis on conversion, faithfulness to their congregation, separation from this evil world, and male headship. They insist their forms of worship and church governance are required by the Word of God, which tells them all they need to believe and do.
