ABSTRACT

The sixth chapter expands on the military dimension of China's cyber power, and to begin with, the chapter traces the origins and the subsequent evolution of information and cyber warfare in the Chinese military thinking, doctrine, and strategy. As a key element of China's force structuring in cyberspace, the chapter discusses the raising of Strategic Support Force in the PLA and the corresponding cyber and asymmetric warfare capabilities. The chapter thereafter looks at how China is synergising the capacities of the civilian and the military sectors in the case of cyber and emerging digital technologies as part of the military–civil fusion strategy. The efforts to fulfil the training and educational requirements of PLA for cyber and related disciplines are discussed towards the end of the chapter.
