ABSTRACT

This first chapter provides a parent-friendly definition of the term dysgraphia and describes the common characteristics that manifest across settings in children identified with the disability. Here, we answer the most frequently asked questions by parents of newly diagnosed children, summarize the most relevant research to help parents differentiate between dysgraphia and other conditions with overlapping criteria, introduce the professionals they may encounter as they navigate a new diagnosis, and outline first steps to get a quick and informed start to getting children the help they need. Additional resources and chapter references are provided to encourage parents to explore reliable sources of information and guidance.
