ABSTRACT

Educational research supports spelling as an important academic skill for children to learn. Explicit spelling instruction is most effective for children with dysgraphia. An explicit spelling approach includes teaching phonological awareness, phonics for spelling, spelling rules, strategies for spelling unknown words, reteaching skills and strategies, word sorting, and reinforcement strategies. The Cover-Copy-Compare learning strategy is an effective way to help children with dysgraphia learn to spell. Teachers might use the evidence-based Spelling Mastery Program. Parents can use learning strategies and games to help promote their child's interest and engagement in spelling.
