ABSTRACT

This chapter provides parents with an overview of the complex processes required to develop good penmanship and the rationale for prioritizing penmanship to improve overall academic achievement, despite the variety of technological supports that children have access to and strong preferences for today. A summary of the most relevant research focused on handwriting instruction is provided to help parents discriminate between what does and does not work and to help them advocate for quality handwriting instruction in the school setting. We also describe engaging and practical strategies for practicing penmanship with their children in the home.
