ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 begins with a vignette describing a third-grade student with writing challenges for the purpose of illustrating the perspectives of his mother and teacher, both unfamiliar with his “hidden disability” of dysgraphia. The chapter provides parents with the key facts they need to navigate special education services with ease, guidelines for establishing a shared language and effective communication with school professionals, and a framework for fostering a collaborative culture characterized by mutual respect. This chapter also highlights common classroom accommodations and research-based supports for students with dysgraphia so parents can advocate for the help their child needs quickly and confidently.
