ABSTRACT

This chapter on dental disease examines conditions that may affect the maxilla, mandible, and dentition. The conditions covered include dental caries, periodontal disease, periapical lesions, dental calculus, and antemortem tooth loss. Enamel hypoplasia has also been included here because it often appears in palaeopathological publications together with the conditions outlined above. However, it is acknowledged that it is not a dental disease but rather an indicator of physiological stress. For each of the above conditions, emphasis is placed on their aetiology, their interconnection, and manifestation on the teeth and jaws. References and suggested readings at the end of the chapter list several important clinical and palaeopathological works on these topics.
