Explains how the book is organised so that anyone can follow it, with section one presenting foundational writing skills and section two extending those skills and widening the issues and genres of life writing.

Explains how each chapter is organised: 1. presents a writing issue, 2. gives readings from well-known authors illustrating the point, and 3. sets a number of exercises to practise the skills.

Points out the rewards and the difficulties of life writing – sharing, healing, creativity – as well as the challenges of others’ feelings and stirring up old emotions.
