ABSTRACT

Exceptions to the passive have received a considerable amount of attention in recent years, e.g. Bach (1979), Beedham (1982), Bolinger (1977), Bresnan (1978), Cureton (1979), Davison (1980), erlmutter (1978), Riddle et al. (1977), Sinha (1974, 1978), Stein (1979) and Ziv and Sheintuch (1981). Nevertheless, the precise factors precluding passiviza-tion continue to elude linguists.
