ABSTRACT

This study has focused on some basic questions: How far has détente influenced the Arab-Israeli conflict? To what extent has a settlement now become possible, after the October war made the rules of détente applicable to the Middle East crisis by introducing, for the first time, commensurability between the principals? In other words, to what extent can what we have termed the ‘rearrangement of contradictions’ on the global level be applied to the Middle East crisis? Can this specific regional crisis find a solution in terms of principles derived from the present global crisis-solving techniques?
