ABSTRACT

In the year 2000, now only a quarter of a century away, the same distance in time which now separates us from World War Two, history will probably take a very different view of the October war from the Arab and Israeli positions which now prevail. But is it possible with any accuracy to prophesy what the balanced opinion of history will be of these events when passions have cooled? We still live with the consequences of the war all around us and this colours our perceptions, but one fact is certain: twenty-five years hence, the history of the October war will bear little resemblance to the propagandist versions promoted today.
