ABSTRACT
Détente has been the subject of conflicting interpretations, one being that it is a new international ‘order’ or ‘system’ and another that it is, on the contrary, only ‘anarchy’ and ‘chaos’. This chapter will attempt to set forth a coherent explanation of this phenomenon.
