ABSTRACT
Détente has brought about some amount of change in US attitudes towards the Middle East. Various interpretations of its significance and scope are put forward. The change was hinted at in Arnaud de Borchgrave’s Newsweek article probing Kissinger’s views six months before the October war, took a more concrete shape with the outbreak of the war, and found full expression with Kissinger’s active diplomacy ever since.
