ABSTRACT

In April 1974, one of the last remaining bastions of European colonialism in the south-western tip of Europe collapsed when a military coup took over in Portugal. Another bastion fell in the south-eastern tip of Europe with the downfall of the military junta in Greece. In both cases, anti-fascists of all shades, including the Communists, regained their freedom after long years of persecution. Between these two furthermost points on Europe’s southern flank, events are moving fast and the left is gaining ground.
