Introduction

This study describes the history and meanings of a key concept of modern sociology, anomie. The popularity of the concept is quite recent - a few decades old - but its roots go back a long way, more than twenty five centuries. ¹ Despite its modern appeal and past fortunes, very little is known about the sociological and pre-sociological roots of the concept of anomie.
