ABSTRACT

On the majority of golf courses, it will be found that the wind will help a golfer as much as it hinders him. The links of the Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club is a notable exception to this rule ; but on other courses it has been my experience that, on the average, the wind will be behind for about six holes, against for a similar number, and across, from right to left or vice versa, at the remaining six. Therefore it is logical, though nonsensical, to argue that since the wind helps almost as much as it hinders a player, there should be no difficulty in playing in a wind, and that scores should be little, if any, higher. And nonsensical though such an argument undoubtedly is, there is much more truth in it than the average golfer cares to acknowledge.
