Hamas launched an attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 from Gaza, killing around 1,200 people and taking civilians and military personnel as hostages, unleashing a brutal war between the sides. Israel responded with heavy bombing, artillery fire, and a ground incursion into Gaza. The fighting halted efforts to normalise relations between Tel Aviv and several Arab Gulf states.
