Tensions rose between Venezuela and Guyana after Caracas signalled it may try to take control of its neighbour’s Essequibo region. Venezuela’s move drew criticism from Brazil and the US, among others. As tensions escalated in late 2023, the US Southern Command conducted flight operations within Guyana to show support.
