ABSTRACT

The changes which the Yorkist kings and Henry VII made in the organization and functions of their landed resources reached their maximum impact by 1509, and began to decline in importance between 1509 and 1536 with a return to more traditional ways of augmenting revenues under the young Henry Vm and Cardinal Wolsey. The following three sections of the Introduction describe these changes chronologically between 1461 and 1536 from the documentary sources. This section is devoted to a comparative description of the nature, composition, extent and uses made of the crown lands before the onset of these changes and afterwards at the height of their effectiveness.
