ABSTRACT

This chapter opens with the case of Dakotah Eliason, who killed his grandfather when he was a teenager. The other members of the family remain angry at Dakotah and advocate for his remaining in prison for the remainder of his life sentence. The Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins’ story is reprised in telling how she proposed restorative justice to the killer of her sister. Restorative justice is explained and shows how that approach brings offenders and victims together. Some states, particularly in the northern and mid-western parts of the U.S. promote the use of restorative justice and mediation for increasing the understanding between victims and offenders.
