ABSTRACT

In Part VII and Chapter 14, we delve into why we are a punitive society that treats juveniles in such a harsh manner. Essentially, this chapter raises the question of why so many juveniles were given life without the possibility of parole sentences. Some reasons are advanced as to why the U.S. society is so tough on juvenile offenders. Among the possible reasons explored have to do with politics, racism and cognitive bias. The chapter ends with the Jones v. Mississippi Supreme Court decision in 2021 and what it may portend for the handling of youthful offenders in America.
