ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the case of one national newspaper and its editorial staff, displaying the main stages of its journalists’ careers. What is the typical profile of the journalists recruited? How are they selected, how do they join the company and how do they get trained? This chapter also describes the organization of the internal market and the way journalists’ careers are marked by a significant turnover in positions. It also shows how journalists distinguish themselves from other employees in the company, and how their own practices can develop independently of the company.
