ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the process of feminization in the Japanese newspaper industry. When did it start? How can its recent acceleration be explained? Women journalists are still a minority in the workforce and are confronted with a “glass ceiling,” limiting their access to higher editorial and managerial positions. While they have represented half of the new graduates for the past few years, their success within the company still depends on their ability to accept the implicitly masculine work norms imposed by organizations.
