ABSTRACT

There is increasing recognition of the role to be played by a wide range of health and welfare professionals in helping people and families affected by alcohol problems although there are some important considerations surrounding the provision of and access to appropriate and adequate training. Employing organizations often find themselves in the position of having to achieve a certain degree of congruence between professional and organizational priorities. In terms of legal or statutory requirements however, employing organizations have a duty to ensure that their workers receive appropriate training to enable them to accord with the law, regardless of whether such training is seen as cost-effective or not. Both employers and employees may find that either formal or informal appraisal and assessment sessions offer opportunities to discuss training needs.
